The Giordano Family Web Site
About this Web Site
What is the goal of this Website?
This site is a never-ending work-in-progress. It's purpose is not just to reveal the history of our family and to honor our ancestors and their accomplishments, but to become a living, running dialog of our present family - always changing and ever growing.
I hope this site will serve as a sort of virtual family room where we can all go to see what's happening with those family members we don't get to see on a regular basis and to exchange stories, photos and memories with one another.
Here's Jim hard at work on the family web site.
Setting up your Family's Web Page

Every family will be able to have their own web page complete with text and photos. (See "The Family Pages" to the right.)

All you need to do to get your page started is to submit the information you want to appear on the page along with some photos and your page will be up on the site in short order. Below is a list of the types of information you should include,

Tell the story of your family, starting with the parents and continuing through all the children up until the time they start their own families (and get their own web page).

Information on the parents should / might include:

  • When & where they met.
  • When & where they were married.
  • Where the lived/moved.
  • What they did for a living.
  • Births of all their children.
  • Any special accomplishments/awards etc.
  • Major family events; Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations etc. and any other events of not.
  • Dae & place of death/burial if applicable.
  • Anything that you want to share about the people, even if you are not in their family.
  • Any interesting pictures can be included on the right with a brief explanation.
  • Check out the SAMPLE FAMILY PAGE for more details.

While you may simply write this information down and mail it in, it would be preferable (to the webmaster) to submit it either as a text file attachment to an e-mail, or typed or copied into the e-mail itself. This will make things go much faster and prevent typos and other kinds of errors in the text.

Photos should include various ages for parents and children. Pictures of the parents around the time they were first married should be at the top of the page, then older ones used farther down in their history. The top kids photos should be as teens. Baby pictures would better appear next to the birth descriptions in the story line. If you send a variety of shots I can sort thru them and choose where the might best be placed. Besides the "Head Shots" at the top of the page figure on around 10-12 additional pictures to illustrate the history text.

This site is divided into several areas:

The Family Tree
This is without a doubt the most important page in the entire web site. This page is a web version of our complete family tree. It is a single sideways-scrolling web page that will open in its own window. It will be updated from time to time so please let the webmaster know if there are any changes or additions that you are aware of. Please check the names & dates for your families to make sure they are correct and send any corrections to our webmaster.
The entries are color & shape coded according to the member's attributes. For example, each members box will have a colored border to indicate if they are living (Green) or deceased (Brown). Please refer to the Key at the beginning of the page. You can even print the entire page (it will take about 11 sheets of paper) and tape it together into a long scroll, or you can order preprinted books from the webmaster.

Navigating from the Family Tree:
The family tree is much more than a visual guide to every family member. It is the main way to get to the web page of the person or family you want to view. Simply click on the members box and you will be taken directly to their web page.

The Family Pages
These pages are for all the families to use however they wish. They may contain stories and pictures of anything pertaining to that family. You can include photos of parents, kids pets, the house, the new boat or motor home etc. Anything you wish to share with the rest of us. These pages are made from a generic template so they can all contain a similar theme - Photos of the parents at the top, followed by smaller pictures of their children below them, including birth/death dates. Below that is a box for text on the left side. This box will contain a running dialog of information, stories and recollections of family members. To the right of this box will be room for picture boxes which can be used to illustrate the stories or simply miscellaneous photos. To see the sample layout, click HERE.

The Quick Navigation Page (Codes)
The "Family Member Codes" page can be used as a very fast way to get to all the Family Members' pages. It is a condensed version of the Family Tree, but only uses the names of the direct descendants (and their code) and is formatted left-to-right so it takes up less width than a standard monitor window. This way you can see every family's complete branch at the same time. You may only have to scroll up and down a little in order to get to the family section you want. Then just click on the person's name whose page you want to see and you will be taken there.

The Family Calendar
This feature is located on a commercial web site. It shows the birthdays of all living family members and (if supplied) the anniversary dates for married couples. This makes it easy to send cards or e-mails to other members for special occasions. To send an e-mail just click their name on the calendar and it will open their family page where you can click their e-mail button or go to the Directory page to get their mailing address if needed.

The Family Galleries
This section is for letting family members show off their photos from recent events such as weddings, births, graduations, reunions/parties or even just great vacation pictures. Each gallery will have its own page where visitors can flip through a series of pictures like a slide show. They can even download and print tem for their scrapbooks if they like. It's a great alternative to getting double+++ prints and mailing them out to everybody one family at a time.

The Unknowns Gallery
This page is for displaying old photos that the owner doesn't know the people in them. Please check this page from time to time to see if you recognize anyone on the page. If you have any mystery photos in your collection, send them in and let everyone in the family help you out.

The Family Albums
This section is for showing your family's photo album - all the best pictures - the ones you keep in a book instead of a shoe box. They are permanently displayed and can be added to from time to time like when a new child is born or someone gets married. But unlike a gallery where you would submit all (or many) of your photos, the album will only include the best one or two from each important family event.

The Family Archives
This section is designed to give a historical perspective - including old photos, newspaper clippings, obituaries related to family members and important events from the past. It will also include group photos from various events that would not be specific to any particular family page.

News & Current Events
This area is for listing upcoming family events and get-togethers as well as a place to post news about the family in general. It will act as a quick way to reach the entire family with a single e-mail (to the webmaster). If you don't have a camera you can still tell some stories about your trip or other events instead of using the gallery page.

Directory / Profiles
These pages are for getting to know each other and to contact one another.
The Directory contains the contact information for each member - name, address, phone, e-mail etc. so we can all call or send a Christmas card. You can also get to their web page and personal profile from here.

The Profile pages will allow each member to list their vital statistics - age, birthday, occupation, favorite color, etc. so that family members with similar interests can get together and discuss the things they have in common To create a profile go to the Directory and follow the instructions there.

Photos Needed Page
This page lists the Family pages that are badly in need of some decent pictures. Maybe you have some in your collection. Check this page out before submitting photos for your own page to see what others you may want to include in your submission.

Family Calendar
The Family Calendar actually exists on another web site. It includes birthdays, anniversary dates and any upcoming Special Events. Any family member may enter his/her event into the calendar right from the calendar web page. To learn more about the calendar and how you can add a new event to it visit the Calendar Page on our own site for complete instructions.

You Can Help!

This site is currently under construction and as such there are bound to be glitches, missing items and non-working links. If you find any parts of this site that don't seem to be working properly please send me an e-mail with the details.

Also, I am still working on the design elements so if you have any ideas for new pages or ways to make the current ones better I would like to hear from you.

And, if anyone knows how to build web pages and has some free time on their hands, I can always use some help!

Jim

Are you planning to send some pictures for your web page?
Then you will want to go to the Photo Submission Information Page.

This page explains the technical details about how pictures need to be scanned for submission to the web site. If you plan to scan your own photos or send them out to be scanned you should read the instructions on this page before proceeding.

The Details of Making Submissions
Sending Stories:

Sending stories and other written information is easy. You can type it directly into an e-mail window and send it directly. You could also type it into another word-processing program then copy and paste the text into an e-mail window. Also, you can type it into a word processor, then save it as a file and attach it to an e-mail. Don't bother trying to format the text - fonts, tabs centering etc. - it won't transfer into the web program. Keep it simple!

If you are low-tech, you can type it on paper and mail it to me. I can use an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program to scan the paper and turn it into typed text that iancopy right into the web site. This would save me a lot of typing time, which I’m slow at. Send them unfolded in a large envelope if possible so they will scan cleaner.
Last resort - you can write them out longhand on paper, then if you can’t find someone to type them for you, send them to me and I will type them into the web site myself.

Sending Photos:

Sending photos is a bit trickier than text. You will need to scan the pictures and save them preferably as TIFF files, then attach them to an e-mail letter with the information that goes with the pictures or copy them to a CD and mail it to the webmaster. More info on sending photos can be found on this page: Photo Submission Info

If you need help in figuring out how to send files or scan photos etc., send me a letter with your problems and I will try to help you as best I can. And don't forget to check the "Photos Needed" page to see if you can help fill in some other family pages while you're poking through all your old photos.

Using the Family Members Codes:

In the process of scanning photos and organizing stories I realized that with so many family members, and many with similar names, I needed a way to identify each person based on their location in the family tree. I also had to create uniquely named folders to store their web site files. So I came up with a letter-code to identify each member based on the first letters of the first names of the members in their lineage, starting with the first American generation. In case of more than one child in the same family with the same first letter I use the second letter as well. So instead of referring to someone as just "Michael" you should add the code - eg.: "FREM" to his name (or just use the code) so I will know that the line is: (Frank/Frank/Elizabeth/Michael). Note that the code only refers to the direct descendents and not the spouses. To refer to a spouse simply add a small "s" to the end of the code.

To view the Family Members Codes page click this link: Family Members Codes

Please try to use these codes when sending photos and stories. It will help me get things right and save me a lot of searching time. It will allow me to do a file search on my computer to find every picture of a particular person without flooding me with lots of other photos of members with the same first name. You might want to print this page and keep it as a reference for future submissions.

While on the Code page you can easily navigate the sites Family Pages. Just click on the name of the person whose page you want to open and it will take you there, if it exists.

Customizing Your Family's Page:

If you would like to customize your web page by adding a distinctive background color/pattern and separator bar you can do so by going to the Customize Page.
